The workshop will take place from 15th to 19th October 2018 in Lima and in Arequipa, both affected by huaycos, with contrasting environments and impacts. A field visit in each location provides a critical focus for the multidisciplinary agenda.
Day 1: LIMA – PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL VULNERABILITY TO HUAYCOS
Introduction to workshop and participants, keynotes on hazard assessment and multidisciplinary working, group discussions and exercises around use of models for hazard assessment, communication, social and physical vulnerability, and engagement with affected communities. Poster session on participant research.
Day 2: LIMA – FIELD VISIT TO CHOSICA
Travel to Chosica (outskirts of Lima) to visit areas affected by huaycos. Exercises on physical vulnerability and hazard prediction, community meetings.
Day 3: TRAVEL TO AREQUIPA
Day 4: AREQUIPA – RISK MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Meeting with scientific agencies and risk management, keynotes on social science methodologies including action research, mentor panel on best practice for developing international collaborations and funding opportunities. Small group discussion session on strengthening capacity in-country and globally to Huayco hazard, and future funding calls.
Day 5: AREQUIPA – FIELD VISIT TO SAN LAZARO AND HUARANGAL; MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH SANDPIT AND INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS
Field visit to affected areas with INGEMMET and IGP, including meeting with community leaders. Participatory action research and team building exercise on impacts. Multidisciplinary group exercise to develop outline proposals for research into huayco hazards.
